HONOR BAND (Please Read)

Region 6 Band Directors,

Good afternoon. I want to be absolutely crystal clear on the Honor Band entry deadlines. If I can be of any help after reading this email, please call me and leave a message. I have my Pre-UIL concert this evening and will not have my phone. Leave a message and I will get back to you tomorrow. Please read the following:
  • Submit the following by March 1, 2019 (tomorrow)
    1. Campus Information section of the online entry form. (type/submit online)
      • No paperwork is due tomorrow, only the online entry form typed and submitted online by hitting the submit button at the bottom of the entry form page.
      • The actual paperwork such as the paper that needs to be signed by your administration is not due until May 29, 2019.
      • Once again, your signed paperwork, IS NOT DUE tomorrow.
    2. Concert Recording Dates section of the online entry form. (type/submit online)
      • Recordings ARE NOT DUE tomorrow. Just the dates you will be recording.
      • Selections on the final audition recording must have been recorded during these public performances in accordance with the Honor Band Rules and Regulations. Each group may have a maximum of four performances scheduled for recordings. Three of these performances may be non-competitive. (Competitive events are adjudicated festivals in which more than one school is represented, and a rating and/or ranking is assigned, and/or critique or comments are given.) The fourth performance must come from the UIL Concert Contest. A recording may not be submitted from any performance other than the four which are on file by March 1.

    3. Judge Nomination section of the online entry form
      • Enter the name and school of 10 people to nominate them as judges for the Honor Band process. DO NOT list any individuals who will have served as a clinician or guest conductor, or have been involved with any rehearsal of this organization during this school year. Honor Band & All-Region Conductors

Colleagues,

This is a friendly reminder that the Honor Band entry deadline is this Friday, March 1, 2019 (remember February only has 28 days). There is NO LATE DEADLINE to enter the Honor Band process. This Friday, March 1st is the ONLY deadline. Please refer to my previous emails concerning the entry process.

The deadline to vote for our future 5A/6A All-Region Band conductors has passed. Unfortunately, only 10 band directors voted.  If this vote had been taken during a region band meeting, it would have been invalid due to not having a quorum.  I have reopened the Google Form to allow more responses. It will take you less than 2 minutes to cast your vote. If you don't vote, you can't complain about who is chosen to conduct our All-Region Bands. Please take care of this TODAY.

Thank you,

Steven Dojahn

Region Jazz '19

Directors,

Attached is a letter from Dr. Rogers for the students in the region 6 jazz band.  I have also included the link to the music so you can get the music to the students.  Since there is only the one band, and it is the first year, Dr. Rogers is hoping to have a killer concert by getting the music to the students ahead of the clinic.  The letter also includes links to listen to performances of the music.

Handbook Revision Committee

At the recent TMEA Region Band Meeting, I created a committee to start the process to revise and update our region band handbook. Thank you to those of you who volunteered for the job. If you have any suggestions or ideas for the handbook, please submit your ideas with a rationale to one of the following committee members as soon as possible. Of course, anyone during an official region band meeting may make a motion to update the handbook. The purpose of this committee is to streamline the process so we are not sitting in the Spring region band meeting for hours upon hours. Here are the committee members:
  • Jon Kraemer, chair
  • Clay Johnson
  • Stephanie Dearborn-Ellis
  • Jason Brents
  • Carissa Hamilton
  • Jordan Freeman

Grant Committee

At the same meeting, I asked for volunteers to be on a brand new committee to look at the possibility of taking advantage of the TMEA Grant money that we can apply for. Thank you for the 3 people who volunteered. This money would be spent on professional development for students and/or directors in our region band division. The committee will be meeting and possibly planning an event by the end of the school year. If you have any suggestions for a wonderful PD opportunity, please email one of the committee members below. Here are the committee members:
  • Mayra Garcia, chair
  • Morgan Marin
  • John Carroll

Student Responsibilities
Region music. Please number your measures before the clinic. Practice the music before the clinic. Bring a pencil. Bring all necessary supplies (amps, cables, sticks). Bring bottled water. No other liquid is allowed. Attend all rehearsals and the concert. Come to the clinic ready to learn

Attendance
As a member of the Region VI Region Jazz Band, all students agree to attend all rehearsals and performances. Students tardy to Region Band events are subject to loss of their chair and/or removal from the Region Band. Failure to attend rehearsals will result in loss of membership in the region band. Conflicts with other organizations, personal schedules, etc. will not constitute a reasonable excuse. In addition, you must be eligible in all classes to participate. If you know now that you cannot attend the All-Region Band Clinic/Concert, please notify your head director immediately so an alternate can be moved up and allowed to participate.

Conductor
The clinician this year is Dr. Mike Rogers from Abilene Christian University. What a great opportunity we have to be able to learn from this outstanding teacher! The better prepared you are going into the rehearsals, the more you will enjoy the experience. Let’s do everything in our power to make this a great experience.

Parking
The Wylie Performing Arts Center has its own parking lot labeled on the included campus map.  Please park in the parking lot and enter/exit from the building through the PAC front doors.  As we are still having school on Friday, parking anywhere else could subject you to a ticket from Wylie ISD.

School
The Wylie Performing Arts Center is clearly labeled and is located next to Wylie High School.  Region Jazz Band students have no reason to enter Wylie HS during the school day.  The Region Jazz Band rehearsals and concert will all be contained to the PAC auditorium, foyer, and dressing rooms.

Rehearsal & Concert Dress
The dress for rehearsal is casual but must be within your school’s dress code. Concert dress should look professional and appropriate, i.e. no jeans or t-shirts.  The PAC has dressing rooms available for boys and girls to change independently.
