Scott and Steven,

Could you please forward this reminder to your region members?  I appreciate it!

JN

Please don't forget about the region workshop with Dr. Tim Rhea this weekend.  He will be discussing aspects of teaching marches and march style as well as rehearsal strategies and planning.  If you are planning on attending you will need to use entrance #19 on the south west corner of the building at Tascosa HS to get to the band hall.  There will be a debate tournament on campus as well so other doors will be open but that is the closest entrance to the band hall.  We will have a brief registration at 9:00 and the workshop will start at 9:15 and go until 12:30.  I'm going to try and have coffee and donuts available so please let me know if you are coming!

Hey Scott and Steven,

Would you forward this on to your region membership?  We are having a TMEA Sponsored Region workshop on February 1, 2020 at Tascosa High School.  Our clinician is Dr. Tim Rhea from Texas A&M.  He will be discussing march literature and teaching march style and technique.  It is a three hour and free for TMEA members.  They will receive three hours of CPE credit for their attendance.  I know it would be a trek for some of them but it might be worthwhile especially for young teachers.  If they are interested and have any questions they can feel free to contact me and I will be happy to answer them.

Have a good one,

JN

TMEA Band Div Office Workers

Colleagues,

I hope everyone has had a great start in the new year and are looking forward to TMEA. I am in need of 2 Region 6 Band Directors to work in the TMEA Band Div Office (Room 222) on Thursday, February 13, from 8-10 am. These workers will answer any questions that convention attendees might have about clinic rooms or schedule.  I have done this before in the past, and it is not a difficult task, but it is a need. If you are interested, please reply back and let me know.

Thank you,

Steven Dojahn

Big Country Y.E.S.

Directors,

The next symposium for Big Country Y.E.S. will be held on Tuesday, February 4th, at Abilene Christian University beginning at 6:30 pm. The speaker for this event is Mr. Dean Surface, Director of Bands at Trinity Springs Middle School in Keller, Texas and he will be speaking on the topic “The Paperless Band Hall.” Dean is the son of a former band director who grew up around west Texas band programs in Andrews and Odessa where he graduated from Permian High School.

Once again, we will not be having a meal brought in for this event, so feel free to grab something and bring it with you. We will be concluding the evening by 8:30 pm. As before, I will provide you with a Certificate of Attendance to provide to your ISD for professional development credit. All Y.E.S. events are free of charge. If you are planning to attend, please go to the following link and register so that we may know how many to prepare for.

The Paperless Band Hall

Clinic Synopsis: In the field of music education, communication and data collection are crucial components to the success of a music program. These two facets of the profession contribute to many binders full of papers that are only able to be organized by one scheme and are not easily searchable. By shifting the way we look at handouts, forms, pass offs, practice records, and various other paper consuming activities we can step closer to a more organized, automated, and paperless classroom.

Dean Surface is the Director of Bands at Trinity Springs Middle School in Keller TX. He began his career 17 years ago in Keller ISD and moved to Trinity Springs upon its opening in 2006. Under Mr. Surface’s direction, the Trinity Springs Wind Ensemble has been awarded Superior ratings at UIL, Peak Festivals, Ovation band contests and the Beach Within Reach festivals. They have also been awarded as outstanding ensemble and best in class at these various contests. The TSMS Wind Ensemble has also been awarded as National Winners in the Mark of Excellence band contest. This coming March the TSMS Wind Ensemble will be performing at the Music for All National Band Festival in Indianapolis. Mr. Surface is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association. He has guest conducted honor groups in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and is a faculty member at the Baylor Summer Music Camp. He has presented clinics for fellow KISD teachers and has previously served as the TMEA Region Middle School Band Coordinator elect, and TMEA Region 30 and 2 Middle School Band Technology Coordinator. On his campus Mr. Surface serves on the leadership council. Mr. Surface is a member of Texas Music Adjudicators Association and adjudicates Pre-UIL, UIL, and various festivals in the DFW area. He also presented two clinics at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic. Mr. Surface holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Baylor University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas Woman’s University. Mr. Surface enjoys teaching band to middle school students because this is where the adventure begins. He also enjoys composing music for middle school students through his publication company technologication.com.
